Location and classification
Höllberg refers to the Auerbacher Höllberg, a registered single vineyard in the Auerbach district of Bensheim on the Hessische Bergstraße. The site belongs to the Großlage Auerbacher Rott.
Landscape and soils
The vineyard landscape below Auerbach Castle comprises terraced vineyards, steep slopes and larger plateaus. Sandy soils are documented, as well as soils of light to medium depth formed from granite weathering, with occasional bands of clay.
Grape varieties and wine style
At the Auerbacher Höllberg, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Scheurebe, Spätburgunder, St. Laurent and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown, among others. Further documented wines are based on Chardonnay, Cabernet blanc and Silvaner, as well as on Pinot Noir for a Blanc de Noir. The wines are described as light and fresh, with fruit-accented acidity.
Maturation
For sparkling wines, traditional bottle fermentation is documented. The wines from a producer associated with the site are matured 100% dry.
