Location and classification
Hinterhalde is the single-vineyard designation for the vineyards of Breitenholz, a district of Ammerbuch. The wine-growing area belongs to the protected Württemberg wine-growing region, Upper Neckar area.
Topography and soils
The vineyards lie above Breitenholz on the Schönbuch edge and offer views across the Ammertal towards the Swabian Alb. The Breitenholzer Hinterhalde is a hillside vineyard that is cultivated predominantly on terraces. Its soils are described as having formed from Gipskeuper and Bunten Mergeln.
Landscape and cultivation
The vineyard plots are largely preserved in their historical, not consolidated structure. Dry-stone walls and calcareous grasslands shape the documented landscape of the wine-growing area. Sheep are also used there to maintain the vegetation.
Wines and history
With the designation Breitenholzer Hinterhalde, wines made from Kerner, Cabernet Jura and Dornfelder are documented. These include a Kerner Kabinett, a rosé as a quality wine, and a red wine made from Cabernet Jura with Dornfelder, also classified as a quality wine. Winegrowing in Breitenholz has been documented since the 12th century.
