Location and classification
Herrentisch is a vineyard site in Lahr in Baden am Schutterlindenberg, a foothill of the Black Forest. The VDP classifies the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Topography and soils
The south-facing, highest-lying part of the Schutterlindenberg shows a west to south-east aspect. It lies at around 240 to 280 metres above sea level; the slope gradient is 10 to 50 per cent; parts of the vineyards are terraced. The soil is documented as loess; in addition, loess and loess clay soils are described, as well as calcareous marl in the subsoil in the western part.
Climate and grape variety
The site receives intensive sunshine and is frequently exposed to cool winds from the east and north. The classified grape variety is Weißburgunder.
Wine and cultivation
Wöhrle produces a Lahrer Herrentisch Weißburgunder from Herrentisch as a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. The wines from the Schutterlindenberg sites are described as having a mineral character as well as a balance of freshness, complexity and texture. The producer’s vineyards have been certified as organic since 1991; chemical-synthetic agents for plant protection, weed control and fertilisation are dispensed with. White wines are fermented and matured in stainless steel and wooden vessels; white VDP.GROSSE GEWÄCHSE are additionally fermented with skin-contact times and spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks.
