Location and classification
Herrenbuck is an officially registered single vineyard in Eichstetten in the Kaiserstuhl area of the wine-growing region Baden. The site belongs to the larger site Vulkanfelsen.
Climate and soils
In the Kaiserstuhl around Eichstetten there is a dry, warm climate. For Herrenbuck, favourable climatic conditions for wine-growing are described. The vineyards include, among other things, terraced plots in different Gewanne with varying site conditions, climatic conditions and patterns of vegetation.
The documented soils consist of volcanic weathering material with loamy components as well as calcareous loess. The loess layer is stated locally as being about 30 centimetres to 30 metres. In the eastern Kaiserstuhl, volcanic rocks and tuffs are frequently covered by loess.
Vines and cultivation
The vine varieties documented for Eichstetter Herrenbuck include Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Scheurebe, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Muskateller, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon and PIWI varieties. In plantings in the site, vines are also up to 40 years old; for new plantings, old, non-clonal propagation material is used in some cases.
For individual Herrenbuck vineyards, species-rich ground cover, mechanical cultivation between the rows, the omission of insecticides, herbicides and additional fertilisation, as well as hand-harvesting with several selection passes, are documented.
Wine styles
From Herrenbuck, dry white, red and rosé wines are documented. Among the red wines, Spätburgunder and red cuvées are found, including a blend of Spätburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. For a documented red cuvée, hand-harvesting and spontaneous must fermentation took place.
