Location and classification
The Herrenberg is an officially registered single vineyard site in Schoden on the lower Saar. The vineyard register assigns it to the wine-growing region Mosel, area Saar, Großlage Scharzberg. It lies in the Schoden cadastral district and, according to the register 2024, comprises 5.8 hectares of planted vineyard area; the vineyard site number is 460251.
Topography and viticulture
The Herrenberg is a steep-slope site. The section referred to as the Stier is the steepest part and has a gradient of more than 80 per cent. It faces south and has a particularly high proportion of slate. The highest documented parcel lies at 270 metres above sea level and is permanently exposed to the wind, creating demanding conditions for the vines. A parcel at the foot of the Herrenberg is planted at a high planting density.
Grape variety and vinification
For wines from the Schoden Herrenberg, Riesling is documented. The wines from the highest parcel are usually produced with a delicate, off-dry profile and combine noticeable acidity with a moderate level of sweetness. The oldest section, referred to by the winery as a Mutterwingert (mother vineyard), produces wines in a dry to the beginning of off-dry style. Wine from a foot parcel matures in 300-litre wooden barrels that had been used previously.
