Location on the Saar
Schoden lies directly on the lower Saar and around five kilometres from Saarburg. The municipality belongs to the Saar wine-growing region within the German wine-growing region Mosel.
Vineyard sites and vineyard areas
The vineyard sites associated with Schoden Geisberg, Herrenberg and Saarfeilser Marienberg are registered in the Saar area, within the Großlage Scharzberg. The vineyard register lists 13.4 hectares for Geisberg, 5.8 hectares for Herrenberg and 3.9 hectares for Saarfeilser Marienberg in the Gemarkung Schoden.
Saarfeilser Marienberg
The Saarfeilser Marienberg is a south-facing hill slope with a gradient of 73 per cent at an altitude of 140 to 170 metres directly above the Saar. The river stores heat, reflects sunlight and has a balancing effect on the local climate. The soil consists of gravelly river deposits with sand and rubble. As a classified grape variety, Riesling is listed.
History and wine-growing
Schoden looks back on more than 1,200 years of history. Wine-growing, arable farming and livestock rearing used to be among the most important economic activities; today, there is still a full-time winemaker working in the municipality. For Geisberg, a Riesling Kabinett is documented. Saarfeilser in Schoden is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE, a private VDP classification and not a statutory German wine-growing classification.
