Saarfeilser Marienberg

Location and Geography

Saarfeilser Marienberg is a legally registered single vineyard in the town and in the cadastral area of Schoden in the Saar district of the winegrowing region Mosel. The site lies directly by the Saar and extends over a steep river slope with a gradient of about 30 to 40 percent. Here, the Saar has cut into an older river course and shaped the steep Saarfeilser slope.

Climate and Soils

The site, which faces entirely south, benefits from the heat storage and the reflected sunlight of the Saar. As a result, it is considered comparatively warm. The site combines young river deposits with older, hard slate rock.

Vines and Farming

Riesling is the most important documented grape variety. For his holdings in the site, Nik Weis documents single-post training and vines aged approximately 40 to 60 years. For the Saarfeilser Grosses Gewächs, the work in the vineyard is carried out by hand; the harvest is selective and, if needed, in several passes.

Name and Wine

The name Marienberg, according to documentation, goes back to an earlier image of the Virgin Mary at the site. The vineyard register Rheinland-Pfalz listed the site in 2024 under number 460252 with 3.9 hectares under vine; an administrative announcement dated 17 November 2025 recorded the renaming to Saarfeilser. The Saarfeilser from Nik Weis is produced as a dry Riesling from a VDP.Grosse Lage under the designation VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. The cellar treatment includes spontaneous fermentation in a stainless-steel tank and, depending on the vintage, maturation in traditional Mosel foudres with a capacity of 1,000 litres. The wines are described as Rieslings with fruit-forward character, elegant and comparatively light on the foot.
