Herrenberg

The name Herrenberg refers to the vineyard sites Heidelberger Herrenberg and Leimener Herrenberg in the wine-growing region Baden. They are associated with Heidelberg and Leimen. The name points to the former vineyard ownership of the Teutonic Order and has been documented as a vineyard designation since the 16th century.

The Heidelberger Herrenberg covers a classified area of 33.00 hectares. The slopes, which face south-west to west, lie at around 120 to 200 metres above sea level and have a gradient of 10 to 40 per cent. The soils consist of loess and shell limestone (muschelkalk). The classified grape varieties listed are Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Auxerrois and Spätburgunder.

The documented core area of the Leimener Herrenberg is oriented to the west to south-west, lies at around 250 metres above sea level, and has a slope gradient of 10 to 30 per cent. The shell limestone is covered by a layer of loess loam; the site is located directly below a protected shell limestone quarry face. Field margins and hedges delimit the core area. Hawthorn hedges at the upper edge provide protection from wind there and protect the microclimate.

For the Leimener Herrenberg, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented, including dry wines and entries as VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS from the Seeger winery. The VDP lists Heidelberger Herrenberg and Leimener Herrenberg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE. This classification is a VDP classification and not a statutory German wine-growing classification.
