Location and Landscape
Henkenberg is an officially registered single vineyard site in Vogtsburg-Oberrotweil between Oberrotweil and Burkheim in the Baden winegrowing region. The site is located on a volcanic ridge with a southerly aspect, 200 to 280 metres above sea level, and slope gradients of 20 to 30 percent. The classified VDP area lies in the steeper parts of the ridge at around 240 to 260 metres and extends from the south-west to the south-east.
Soils and Climate
The soils consist of volcanic rock and/or volcanic weathering material with loess. They are described as being rich in skeletal components; at the site, garnet was documented. Henkenberg receives long, direct sunlight and is additionally warmed by Mediterranean winds that travel through the Rhône–Saône corridor into the Upper Rhine plain.
Grape Varieties and Classification
In the VDP site profile, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay are listed as the classified grape varieties for Henkenberg. The site is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; according to information from the VDP, the approval under wine law was still pending. As a VDP estate in Henkenberg, Salwey is named.
Name
The name Henkenberg refers to the former site of a noble gallows execution facility. “Henken” is connected here with hanging.
