Location and landscape
The Heiligenstein is a named wine-growing site above Mühlhausen in the Rhein-Neckar district. The site belongs to the wine-growing region Baden, within the Kraichgau area. A documented path reaches the highest point at around 225 metres above sea level. A viewpoint offers views over the Kraichgau landscape towards Angelbachtal, Letzenberg, Galgenberg and the Rhine plain.
Soils and grape varieties
The soils of the Heiligenstein are described as loess, loam and clay. In the site, among others, Sauvignon Blanc, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Auxerrois, Merlot, Spätburgunder and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown.
Wines and development
The Mühlhausener Heiligenstein is associated with red and white wines, rosé and sparkling wine products. Documented examples include dry Riesling, dry Grauburgunder, dry Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, dry Spätburgunder and semi-dry rosé. Wines by the local producer Klaus Rühl are described as Badischer Landwein.
History and cultivation
The local vineyard site at the Heiligenstein was initiated following a report about the winegrowers of Mühlhausen by Oskar Rühl. In early 2014, Simona Maier founded the wine manufactory at the Heiligenstein in Mühlhausen. The work in the vineyard is aligned with natural cycles; in the cellar, the wines are given time and attention to preserve their character.
