Location and classification
Heil is an officially registered single vineyard in the municipality of Frettenheim in the Wonnegau, an area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The site belongs to the Großlage Pilgerpfad.
Topography and name
The vineyards lie at around 150 to 192 metres above sea level and face north. The name has been documented since 1681 as “uff der Heyl” and is associated with Hade or Hell, a term for a gentle slope.
Soils
The officially described soil consists of calcareous marl and Pelosol, which was formed from clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea. It is deep, calcareous and clay-rich, contains swellable clays, and shows limited permeability and aeration. In addition, it is described as nutrient-rich and highly calcareous. For parcels within the site, clay, marl and loess with calcareous veins are also mentioned.
Area and wine style
The planted area comprises 62 hectares. With marl-Pelosol, full-bodied, dense and richly textured wines are associated, with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit. From the soils with clay, marl, loess and calcareous veins, slender, finely fruity wines are also described.
