Location and Geography
Haubenberg is a single-vineyard site in Saulheim in the Nierstein wine-growing area and in the Domherr region of Rheinhessen. The site covers around 96 hectares, lies at approximately 160 to 220 metres above sea level, and is oriented to the south.
Soil and Wine Profile
The soil consists of calcareous, clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea and is described as marl, or respectively as Pelosol. It is deep, nutrient-rich and strongly calcareous. Spring-capable clay limits the permeability of water and air. From this soil, full-bodied, dense and substantial wines are described, with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit, which are more strongly fruit-driven than shaped by mineral character.
History and Grape Varieties
The site was documented in 1279 as belonging to Hubin and in 1486 as “an dem huberberge” (on the Huber Mountain). The name Haubenberg is derived from the Middle High German huobe, a unit of agricultural land. In the Saulheim Haubenberg, Grauburgunder is documented; in addition, Riesling and Weissburgunder are evidenced in site wines from Haubenberg.
