Hasensprung

Hasensprung is an officially classified single vineyard within the cadastral area of Jugenheim. It belongs to the winegrowing area of Bingen and to the Großlage Kaiserpfalz in Rheinhessen. In the 2024 vineyard register, the planted area is given as 48.7 hectares. The vineyards of Jugenheim, which include Hasensprung, are located on sunny south-facing slopes.

Documented are calcareous rendzina soils from tertiary marine deposits, with calcareous reef material from algae, as well as marly pelosoil from calcareous clay deposits of the Tertiary sea. The shallow to medium-deep calcareous rendzina is very calcareous, stony and sandy loam with limited water storage available for vines, good aeration and good capacity for warming. The marly pelosoil is a deep, calcareous clay soil with a high proportion of source clay, restricted water flow and aeration, and a high nutrient content.

With the calcareous rendzina, wines with balanced acidity, a mineral-calcareous character, and notes of citrus, apple and gooseberry are associated; later, also mango and passion fruit. The marly pelosoil stands for fullness, a dense texture, moderate acidity, a creamy mouthfeel and ripe fruit aromas such as mango, apricot and honeydew melon.

From Hasensprung, Spätburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon as rosé as well as a cuvée of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are documented. Spätburgunder is listed as a dry red wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon rosé is a dry rosé wine and Qualitätswein b.A.; the Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon cuvée is a dry red Qualitätswein b.A.

A winery with vineyard areas in Hasensprung reports on the avoidance of herbicides and mineral fertilisers, as well as on vine pruning, leaf work, shoot thinning and selective harvesting with deliberately reduced yields. For wines from areas that include Hasensprung, for white wines cool fermentation and ageing in stainless steel are documented; selected batches ripen in tonneau or large wooden casks. Red wines are fermented on the skins and then aged in large wooden casks or French barriques. The name Hasensprung is traced back to the Middle High German word for spring or origin and is linked to a possible earlier water place for hares.
