Location and classification
Hasenläufer is an officially registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the municipal and cadastral area of Burgen in the Mosel wine-growing region. It belongs to the Bernkastel area and the Großlage Kurfürstlay. The officially recorded vineyard area covers 29.3 hectares; in the vineyard register of Rhineland-Palatinate, the site is listed under number 410312.
Topography and soils
The area, farmed as a steep slope (Steillage), lies on a gently sloping hillside oriented towards the south-west, with varying levels of sunshine. Hasenläufer is described as a former Mosel meander; the Mosel as it runs today lies around three kilometres further north. In the upper hillside area, weathered slate is found, while the lower hillside is characterised by alluvial soils deposited during the last Ice Age. In addition, a deep Devonian slate subsoil and a high humus content are described.
Varieties and wine styles
Riesling is the most important documented grape variety of the site. Documented are Riesling Kabinett, fine off-dry; Riesling Spätlese, fruity-sweet; and dry Riesling.
Documented vintage
A Riesling from 2012 was harvested at 87 °Oechsle and had 21.5 g/l residual sugar, 6.6 g/l acidity and 10.8% by volume alcohol. The grape harvest was carried out by hand at 85 hectolitres per hectare. Harvesting, transport and pressing were carried out gently; the cold must was sedimented before fermentation. The fermentation lasted two and a half months.
