Location and landscape
Villages with the postal code 54472 are located near Bernkastel-Kues in the central Moselle valley and belong to the Mosel. The municipality lies at the outer end of a former Moselle valley, around three kilometres from the present Moselle course, near the rising foothills of the Hunsrück. The vineyards are predominantly on steep slopes around the town. Owing to its situation in the lee of the Eifel, rainfall in north-westerly weather conditions often passes over the municipality.
Vineyard sites and soils
The Hasenläufer is an undulating slope facing south-west, with varying exposure to sunlight and deep Devonian slate soil with a high humus content. The Kirchberg is also oriented to the south-west and is protected from westerly winds by woodland; its soil consists of soft slate. The south-facing Römerberg features deep, humus-rich Devonian slate with a water-holding layer of soft slate beneath.
Vine-growing areas and wines
For 2024, the Burgen register of vineyard sites records 29.3 hectares of planted vineyard area in Hasenläufer, 15.4 hectares in Kirchberg and 7.2 hectares in Römerberg. Riesling is one of the defining grape varieties; in addition, there are smaller plantings of Spätburgunder. Hasenläufer and Römerberg are associated with Riesling wines, while Kirchberg produces fruity wines with firm acidity.
Historical background
Historical records trace the origin of the settlement back to a Roman burgus at a former Celtic site. Burgen belonged to the historical County of Veldenz, the territorial development of which has been documented since the Middle Ages.
