Location and Landscape
Harstell is a registered vineyard site in Großostheim, in the Churfranken area of the Franconian wine-growing region, and is assigned to the Großlage Heiligenthal. The vineyards of Großostheim lie in a side valley of the Main. A mild climate and sun-exposed vines characterise the wine-growing area.
Soil and Cultivation
The Harstell site, associated with the winery Petermann, extends along a gentle hill and features loess marl. In the wider Großostheim wine-growing area, soils occur from weathered red sandstone with loess deposits. The vines are cultivated conventionally and are harvested by hand; sustainability measures are used.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
For Harstell, Müller-Thurgau is documented for Weingut Petermann. From this comes a white quality wine in dry, semi-dry and sweet versions. The style is described as light, fruity and aromatic, with comparatively low acidity.
History and Wine Legislation
According to the municipal documentation, viticulture in Großostheim goes back several centuries. The Großostheim winegrowers’ cooperative was founded on 7 February 1947 by 23 members. Harstell is registered in the Bavarian vineyards register as an admissible geographical designation for quality wines and Prädikat wines. For a registered vineyard designation, at least 85 percent of the grapes used must come from the specified geographical area. The documented production includes hand-harvesting, gentle pressing, fermentation in tank or in cask, maturation, filtration and bottling.
