Location and climate
Haltnau is a historic winery on the municipal territory of Meersburg, between Meersburg and Hagnau, directly on the shore of Lake Constance. The south-southwesterly to southwestern-facing vineyards extend from the higher-lying area of the vineyard tower down towards the lake. The climate is described as mild, partly sunny and partly humid.
Soils and historic facilities
Molasse and moraine gravel are cited as soil materials; a further description characterises the site as light and stony. The historic vineyard guardian’s cottage (Rebwächterhäusle) stands at about 439 metres above the vineyards. The listed ensemble of particular importance in Baden-Württemberg includes, among other things, the main building, the former Torkel barn, the vineyard tower and the former bakehouse.
History
In 1272, the citizen Ulrich of Constance donated a vineyard called Haltuon to the Holy Spirit Hospital (Heilig-Geist-Spital) in Constance. The property has been connected with the Hospital Foundation of Constance (Spitalstiftung Konstanz) ever since.
Wines and grape varieties
Meersburger Haltnau is an officially used single-vineyard (Einzellage) designation in connection with the Spitalkellerei Constance and the Hospital Foundation of Constance. For wines bearing this designation, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Traminer and Pinot varieties are documented. Among other examples, fruit-forward Müller-Thurgau, dry or semi-dry Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder, and a dry Blanc de Noir made from Pinot Meunier are evidenced. A Grauburgunder was recorded as a Trockenbeerenauslese with a sweet-style designation; in addition, quality wines and Prädikatsweine including Kabinett, Spätlese and Trockenbeerenauslese are documented.
