Location and Site
Halde is a named vineyard site within Stuttgart. The vineyard lies directly below the municipal winery. The soil contains shell limestone. The site is described as warm, which means the grapes ripen quickly; at the same time, maintaining an adequate level of acidity is a documented viticultural requirement.
Varieties and Planting
At Halde, Riesling, Trollinger and Chardonnay are planted. The documented planting areas include 179.2 ares of Riesling from the years 1992 and 1975, 63.9 ares of Trollinger from the year 2000, and 20 ares of Chardonnay from the year 2018. According to a viticulture statistics report from 2015, Riesling was the predominant variety, accounting for 65 percent of the planted area. The Trollinger areas form the largest contiguous Trollinger planting of the municipal winery.
Winemaking
The Riesling from Halde is either matured as a standalone wine or, in suitable years, used as the base wine for sparkling wine. Chardonnay is documented as a Morillon type from Styria; its first documented harvest was in 2019. In the cellar, it matures in a used small wooden cask, undergoes a short period of mash contact, and then stores for a longer time on full lees.
History and Protection Status
In 1950, the municipal winery cultivated the consolidated vineyard areas of Halde and Zuckerle of approximately five hectares. A severe hail event destroyed the vines in Halde on 15 August 1972; in 1973, the site was again managed under the areas farmed by the municipal winery. Halde is also listed in the Stuttgart by-law on agricultural neighbour rights dated 25 May 1970 as a protected vineyard site.
