Location and Classification
The Hahnenberge are the legally registered single vineyard Steigraer Hahnenberge in the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut. The responsible municipality listed is Steigra. The officially recorded planted area as at 31 December 2024 was 51.3745 hectares.
Landscape and Soils
Near Steigra, the vineyards are on slopes that fall away from the Querfurt Plain towards the Unstrut valley. The wine-growing landscape is shaped by a dry, warm climate and south- to south-west-facing slopes. For the Steigraer Hahnenberge, shell limestone (Muschelkalk), Keuper sandstone (Buntsandstein) and loess (Löss) are documented as soil parent rocks.
Grape Varieties and Wines
From the site, Riesling, Solaris, Portugieser, Cabernet Cortis and Silvaner are documented. Among the examples are Riesling Spätlese, dry Portugieser German Quality Wine, and dry Cabernet Cortis German Prädikatswein Auslese. The Silvaner was produced partly from grapes from the Steigraer Hahnenberge.
History and Winemaking
Wine-growing in Steigra is already documented in a deed concerning the consecration of the church (Kirchweihe) from 1207, which mentions the vineyards of the Reinsdorf monastery. A 2022 Cabernet Cortis ripened for ten months in barriques. A 2021 Silvaner from old vines was produced partly using grapes from the Hahnenberge and was developed in wooden casks.
