Location and classification
Gottesgarten is an officially registered single vineyard in the municipality and cadastral district of Selzen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Gutes Domtal in Rheinhessen. In the 2024 register of vineyard sites, it is listed under vineyard site number 720420.
Topography and soil
The vineyard, which is oriented from south-east to south, lies at around 140 to 240 metres above sea level. It is described as amphitheatre-shaped and stretches out in front of Selzen. The soil is classified as marl-pararendzina and consists of calcareous loams and sands from deposits of the Tertiary Sea. The deep, lime-rich clay profile has a high proportion of spring clay.
Wine character
The wines are associated with a dense, powerful and full-bodied structure, balanced acidity and a lasting fruit character. According to the profile, white wines show ripe aromas of exotic fruit, while red wines show dark fruit and smoky spiciness. For Gottesgarten wines, Riesling and Spätburgunder are documented.
Cultivation and vinification
For its Gottesgarten wines, the winery Binzel documents yield reduction through vine pruning, careful work in the vineyard, hand harvesting and gentle processing of the grapes. In the surrounding area of the site, bee hotels, flower meadows and planted trees and shrubs are among the measures used to increase biodiversity. The wines ferment spontaneously in barriques and are aged on the lees for several months; some mature in French oak.
