Location and Classification
Goldberg is a vineyard site spanning multiple municipalities in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen, with parcels in the municipal districts of Alsheim and Mettenheim. The site belongs to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. The Alsheim portion lies at about 85 to 90 metres above sea level.
Soils and Wine Character
Documented are loess and colluvial soils (colluvisols) with a humus-rich topsoil and very good root penetration. These areas are indicative of buffered acidity and initially restrained, straight-line wines with notes of yellow fruits, apple, pear, peach, chalk and smoke.
Further soils of gravel, sand and clay are classified as Rigosol. The glacial river deposits are moderately deep, well permeable to water and aerated, but store only limited plant-available water. They warm up easily, are low in nutrients and moderately to well rootable. The wines show Pinot affinities, frequently in red-wine styles, herb-spiced aromas, a firm structure, freshness, juiciness and potential for ripening.

The name is documented in 1523 as am goldtberg. The regional wine authority explains it as an expression of appreciation and not as a reference to precious metal. In the 2024 Rhineland-Palatinate vineyards directory, Goldberg bears the single-vineyard number 720501.
For Goldberg, 139.6 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded in Alsheim and 84.2 hectares in Mettenheim, for a total of 223.8 hectares.
