Location and Size
Götzenborn is a single vineyard site in the Wolfsheim district of the Abtey collective vineyard in the Bingen sub-region of Rheinhessen. The officially designated vineyard area for the 2024 vintage was 66.1 hectares.
Soils
Löss over para-rendzina, as well as marl over pelosol, are documented. The löss-para-rendzina soils are deep, calcareous and fertile loams with clayey silt, good water storage that is available to plants, and good root penetration. The marl-pelosol soils consist of deep, strongly calcareous clay with clay that is capable of swelling, limited water permeability and aeration, as well as difficult root penetration.
Wine Style
The proportion from the löss-para-rendzina is described as producing yellow-fruited, slender and refreshing wines with mild acidity and medium structure. The marl-pelosol proportion is associated with full-bodied, dense and substantial wines with moderate acidity and a creamy texture.
Grape Varieties and Maturation
For Götzenborn, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer have been documented through appropriate wines from the Bernhard winery. The Götzenborn Chardonnay is described as a dry organic wine with spontaneous fermentation and a restrained use of wood.
