Location and Landscape
The single vineyard Golmsdorfer Gleisburg lies within the cadastral area of Golmsdorf at the outlet of the Gleis valley into the middle Saale valley. It belongs to the Saale-Unstrut region and extends over 4,5002 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Climate and Geology
The steep vineyard site is located on the south-facing slope of the Großer Gleisberg. Its mild local microclimate and the sunny south-facing aspect are protected from westerly winds by an extension of the Jenaer Hufeisen. The Gleis valley lies in the Muschelkalk region around Jena; at higher elevations Muschelkalk is present, further down the valley Rotliegendes.
Viticulture and History
Viticulture on the southern slope of the Gleis valley has medieval origins and is described as a local tradition about 800 years old. After a historic interruption, the winemaker Wolfram Proppe planted new vines in 2006 in the single vineyard. The steep site is traversed by the orchid educational trail between Kunitz and Golmsdorf.
Wines
Dry quality wines made from Auxerrois and Chardonnay are documented. A Chardonnay–Auxerrois cuvée was matured in an oak barrel. An Auxerrois from the site was gently pressed and aged for a longer period on the lees.
