Location and landscape
Golmsdorf is a municipality in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia and lies at the outlet of the Gleistal valley, where the tracks flow into the Saale. The municipality belongs to the wine region Saale-Unstrut.
Geology and vineyard sites
The municipality’s territory includes the Gleistal valley and adjacent high plateaus. The slopes are steeper in the Muschelkalk zone, while in the Bunter sandstone zone they run flatter and more gently hilly. The historic vineyard slopes are oriented to the south to south-west; the vineyard Gleisburg is sheltered on a hillside.
Viticulture and history
Golmsdorfer Gleisburg is an officially listed single site (Einzellage) in Saale-Unstrut. As of 31 December 2024, 4.5002 hectares of vineyard area were planted there. Older vineyards on the south- and south-west-facing slopes have, in modern times, been partly replaced by fruit orchards; historic vineyard cottages (Weinberghäuschen) have been preserved.
Grape varieties and wine style
Kerner and Auxerrois are documented in Gleisburg. Wines verified as coming from the site also include Riesling, Chardonnay and Bacchus. The documented examples are mostly dry white wines from the quality wine category; a Bacchus is semi-dry. A Red Riesling was fermented on the mash and matured for six months in a small oak barrel.
