Location and classification
The Glatzen vineyard site, locally also called Neuseser Glatzen, is located in the district of Neuses am Berg in Dettelbach in Bavaria. It extends as a broad strip to the north and north-east of the town along the southern beginning of the Volkacher Mainschleife on the KT 31. Glatzen belongs to the Großlage Volkacher Kirchberg in the area of the Volkacher Mainschleife of the Franconian wine-growing region Franken.
Relief and subsoil
The vineyard site, which is predominantly oriented to the east, has in part slopes inclined towards the north-east with documented gradients of around 30 to 60 percent. It lies on the slope above the Main valley and offers views over the Volkacher Mainschleife. The geological substrates documented are Upper Muschelkalk and Lettenkeuper. For the wine-growing area around Neuses am Berg, a mild climate and numerous hours of sunshine are described.
Grape varieties and wine styles
As the predominant grape varieties, Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are documented. In addition, Riesling and Domina are mentioned from this site. Wines from Neuseser Glatzen are documented both as white wines and as red wines.
Area and history
For the year 2004, a vineyard area of approximately 70 hectares is documented; a source from 1993 gives approximately 80 hectares. In 1971, 15 former individual vineyard names were combined to form the uniform site designation Glatzen.
