Location and classification
Glatzen refers to the single vineyard Neuseser Glatzen, also known as Neuseser Glatze, in the district of Neuses am Berg in Dettelbach in Franconia. The wine-growing site belongs to the Großlage Volkacher Kirchberg in the area of the Volkacher Mainschleife.
Landscape and soils
The vineyards stretch to the north and north-east of Neuses am Berg along the county road KT 31, the Main and the southern beginning of the Volkacher Mainschleife. The slopes, which are predominantly oriented to the east and partly to the north-east, have an incline of 30 to 60 percent and fall down towards the Main valley. From there there are views over the Volkacher Mainschleife. In the site, shell limestone and Lettenkeuper are found; the shell limestone soils of the parcels of winegrower Düll are described as storing water and heat.
Vines and wine styles
For Neuseser Glatzen, among others Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Riesling, Kerner, Scheurebe, Weißburgunder, Domina, Dornfelder and Rotling are documented. The wines range from dry through delicately off-dry, semi-dry and sweetish to noble-sweet. Also listed are quality wines as well as Kabinett, Spätlese and Eiswein. Winegrower Düll cultivates 12 hectares of vineyard area in Neuseser Glatzen.
Historical name and cultivation
Neuses am Berg has been mentioned in records since 1340 and is considered a traditional Franconian winegrowing village. The current name Glatzen was created by combining several historical vineyard names and was adopted in connection with the reforms of the German Wine Law of 1971 as a single-vineyard name. For cultivation, intensive manual work, careful processing of the grapes, intensive must clarification and controlled fermentation are described.
