Location and classification
Giebelhöll is a registered single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Weinähr. It belongs to the collective vineyard site of Lahntal in the winegrowing region of Mittelrhein, to which the former winegrowing region of Lahn has been legally assigned since 1971. In the official list of vineyard sites for 2024, the site is recorded under number 320804 with 1.6 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Slope and soil
Giebelhöll is located as a steep slope above Windener Straße. The cultivation of the steep terrain historically required manual labour. The vineyard soil consists of a combination of pumice ash and slate debris. According to the site, the pumice ash is traced back to material that was deposited during the eruption of the Laacher See and was then transported by wind.
Vines and wines
For individual plots, Riesling, Scheurebe, Müller-Thurgau, Souvignier gris and Cabernet Cortis are documented. An old plot planted in 1953 with Riesling and Scheurebe is vinified together due to its low yields. The cultivation describes the wines from Giebelhöll as mineral and finely fruity, with aromas of yellow fruits and elderflower blossoms.
Historical and current cultivation
The site name is documented for Weinähr as early as 1302 in the historical form “Gyvelhelde”. In a plot referred to as Weinährer Giebelhöll, in April 2021 around 750 vines each of the varieties Souvignier gris and Cabernet Cortis were planted after the previous vineyard had been cleared in the winter of 2019/2020. Cultivation includes, among other things, mechanical soil cultivation, mulching, care of the vines between the rows, tying up the shoots, leaf training, mowing and plant protection.
