Location and Aspect
The Fohrenberg is a vineyard site in Ihringen in the southern Kaiserstuhl in Baden. The vineyard plots oriented to the south to south-east are at around 220 to 360 metres above sea level. Large and small loess terraces surround the wine-growing site.
Soil and Climate
The documented soils include volcanic rock and volcanic weathering material. The loess of the terraces can absorb and release water as well as store heat. The southern aspect ensures high levels of sunshine. Ihringen has a climate influenced by the Mediterranean.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Silvaner and Chardonnay are classified for the Ihringen Fohrenberg. A documented Ruländer from the site stands for the traditional German name for Pinot Gris. The wines are described as full-bodied and rich in bouquet; an example is a sweet white dry beerenauslese.
Classification and History
The VDP lists the Ihringen Fohrenberg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE in the Baden wine-growing region, with a classified area of 450 hectares. The name Fohrenberg is derived from “Föhre”, the German word for pine. Wine growing in Ihringen has been documented at least since the year 962.
Cultivation
Since 2022, the entire vineyard area of Ihringen, including the Fohrenberg, has been included in a programme with pheromone dispensers for biological control of the vine moths. Due to the topography, the grapes are harvested mostly by hand.
