Location and Aspect
Fässerlay is a vineyard site within the Bopparder H amms near Boppard in the Mittelrhein wine-growing region. The vine areas facing south-east have average slope gradients of around 40 to 50 per cent. As a result, the site receives sunshine early in the morning and is in shade earlier in the afternoon than other areas of the Bopparder H amms, which contributes to a slower ripening of the grapes.
Soil and Grape Variety
The subsoil consists mainly of finely weathered, dry and stony slate-like rock. The soils are also described as slightly acidic. Riesling is given as the classified grape variety.
Wine Style
Rieslings from Fässerlay are described as elegant and spirited, with pronounced acidity, slate-influenced minerality, spice and finesse. Documented are dry and gently off-dry Riesling late harvests as well as dry Riesling auslese.
VDP Classification
The VDP lists Fässerlay as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with a classified area of 8.22 hectares. Matthias Müller is designated as the VDP winemaker for the site. The designation is a VDP classification; under German wine law, Fässerlay is currently not yet approved as a vineyard site.
