Enselberg

The name Enselberg stands for at least two documented vineyard sites in the wine-growing region Baden: the Jechtinger Enselberg and the Bischoffinger Enselberg north of Bischoffingen in Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl. The Bischoffingen site is located at the Kaiserstuhl.

The Jechtinger Enselberg is a well-aerated, west-facing site at an altitude of 200 to 240 metres, with a slope of 0 to 20 per cent. Light and dark volcanic rocks are overlaid by loess. The VDP lists the site as VDP.First vineyard site with 3.58 hectares of classified area and Spätburgunder as the classified grape variety.

For the Jechtinger Enselberg, Spätburgunder wines with a fine, finesse-focused style are documented, in which acidity and finesse are emphasised more than strength and concentration. Two plots were planted exclusively with Burgundy clone varieties of Pinot Noir in 1999 and 2003.

The Bischoffinger Enselberg has weathered volcanic soil with a high proportion of loess loam and is managed as a single-site within the origin-related quality pyramid of the Bischoffinger winegrowers. The documented wines include Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Ruländer. The site is associated with Spätburgunder red wines as well as dry white wines and sweet wines made from Burgundy varieties.

A documented Spätburgunder Reserve comes from yield-reduced vines and matures for at least nine months in barriques. By the German Wine Law of 1971, the Bischoffinger vineyard names were reduced to the locally recognised single sites Steinbuck, Rosenkranz and Enselberg.
