Location and landscape
Engelsberg is a documented single vineyard near Endingen in the wine-growing region Baden. Plots are situated along a loess hollow-way between Endingen and Amoltern. The site comprises elevated, comparatively wind-exposed vineyards, south-facing slopes and terraces around Endingen.
Soil and grape varieties
The soils are described as calcareous loess, which in places lies over weathered volcanic rock. For some areas, volcanic rock is also mentioned with a lower proportion of loess. In Engelsberg, among others, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Muskateller, Scheurebe, Müller-Thurgau and Ruländer are planted.
Wines and vinification
Documented wines from Endinger Engelsberg include a dry Grauburgunder Kabinett, a delicately off-dry Muskateller Kabinett, a dry Grauburgunder Spätlese and Spätburgunder from old vines. At Weingut Knab, yields are reduced and the grapes are hand-picked selectively. The wines mature in stainless steel for several months on the lees; a Grauburgunder from old vines is produced for 90 per cent in stainless steel and for 10 per cent in wood and remains on the lees for six months.
Historical names
The Endingen field name register lists the name Enlinsberg for the year 1308 and Englisberg for 1492. City history also documents a land consolidation project at Engelsberg, which followed earlier projects from the 1950s.
