Location and orientation
The Eichelberg is located in Hilsbach, a district of Sinsheim, in the wine-growing region of Baden. The vineyards are oriented to the south to south-east and are protected by a wooded ridge.
Relief and soils
The site lies on a slope with a gradient of 10 to 50 percent and an altitude of about 230 to 310 metres above sea level. The VDP site profile also specifies elevations of 270 to 320 metres and a gradient of 38 percent. The characteristic materials described are Middle Keuper and loess; the geological data field records white calcareous marl.
Cultivation and grape varieties
A land consolidation reorganised the small, steep plots, adapted the access roads and made it possible to cultivate the vineyards with machinery. The project covered around 16 hectares of vineyard area. As classified grape varieties, the VDP site profile lists Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
History and classification
Winegrowing on the Eichelberg, which rises to around 330 metres, has been documented in Hilsbach since the Middle Ages. The VDP lists the site as EICHELBERG, Hilsbach, VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with a classified area of 6.00 hectares.
