Location and classification
Edelmann refers to the single vineyard Laubenheimer Edelmann in the Mainz district of Laubenheim in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard area covers 33 hectares. The wine site lies at 110 to 160 metres above sea level and is oriented to the east.
Soils
Documented are shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and stony sandy loams over limestone and Rendzina. In addition, Pararendzinas formed from loess occur: deep, calcareous loams with a high level of water storage available to plants and good conditions for root penetration.
History and viticulture
The name of the vineyard refers to the former ownership of an aristocratic landowner. In wine-law terms, it is assigned to the area of Nierstein and the large vineyard Sankt Alban, and is listed as the single vineyard Edelmann in the cadastral district of Laubenheim. For this site, among other things, 32-year-old Silvaner vines on SO4 rootstock are documented, as well as old Riesling vines, whose roots are said to reach up to seven metres into the loess soils.
Grape varieties and wine styles
From Laubenheimer Edelmann, wines made from Riesling, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Cabernet blanc, Spätburgunder and Silvaner are documented. These include dry and gently off-dry white wines, a sweet Riesling Spätlese, and a dry Spätburgunder rosé. For a premium Riesling, yield reduction, the selection of healthy grapes, late harvesting and selective hand harvesting, as well as gentle cellar treatment with slow cool fermentation and twelve months’ lees ageing are documented.
