Location and Classification
Edelacker is a legally registered winegrowing site in the municipality of Freyburg within the quality winegrowing region of Saale-Unstrut. The officially registered area of Freyburger Edelacker comprised 30,3422 hectares as of 31 December 2024.
Topography and Soils
The steep slopes, oriented from south to south-southeast, lie at 115 to 220 metres above sea level and have gradients of 15 to 60 percent. The subsoil consists of shell limestone; deep, weathered shell limestone soils lie over heat-storing rock. The climate is cool and dry-continental and is influenced by the microclimate of the river valley.
Classification and Grape Varieties
The area of Edelacker classified by the VDP comprises 1.03 hectares. It is designated as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; this is a VDP classification and not a statutory German quality wine category. The classified grape varieties listed are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Spätburgunder and Riesling.
History and Wine Character
The name Edelacker has been documented in a local historical record in connection with the vineyard since 1170 and is associated with the Edelacker legend of Landgrave Ludwig of Thuringia. The vineyard plots are cultivated exclusively by hand. The wines are associated with mineral character derived from shell limestone and a fine herbal bouquet.
