Location and classification
Doktor is a legally registered single vineyard site in the municipality and wine-growing town of Venningen in the area of the Southern Wine Route (Pfalz). The site belongs to the large vineyard Trappenberg and is listed in the register of wine-growing sites for the 2024 vintage with a planted area of 380.4 hectares.
Soil and climate
The area is described as having around seven percent slope and 93 percent flat terrain. The documented soils are loamy sand and loess-loam. The climate described for the vineyards of Southern Palatinate is considered mild; a producer mentions up to 2,000 hours of sunshine.
Grape varieties and wines
Under the designation Venninger Doktor, wines are documented made from Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder, Spätburgunder, Ortega, Sauvignon Blanc, Gelbem Muskateller, Morio-Muskat, Regent, Kerner, Scheurebe, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder. For individual Doktor parcels, only Frühburgunder is specified. The range includes dry and semi-dry wines, Spätlese, Beerenauslese as well as a Muscateller sparkling wine; a documented vintage from 2017 was produced by classic bottle fermentation.
Name and wine-growing history
The name Doktor is associated with Florentius of Venningen, a 16th-century Heidelberg university professor, court adjudicator and chancellery official of the Electorate Palatinate. The local museum documents wine-growing in Venningen since the year 859 and lists Doktor as a single vineyard site.
