Location and context
Venningen is a municipality in the district of Südliche Weinstraße in Rhineland-Palatinate and is presented as a wine village along the Südliche Weinstraße. The municipality lies at around 49.282588° north latitude and 8.173485° east longitude. It belongs to the Pfalz.
Vineyard site Doktor
Viticulture in the cadastral area has already been documented in a royal charter dated 29 April 859. The official vineyard site directory for 2024 lists the Doktor as a single vineyard site in the Venningen cadastral area with 380.4 hectares of planted vineyard area. The site is assigned to the Großlage Trappenberg in the Südliche Weinstraße area.
Historical cultivation
The historical development of the vine training and cultivation system is described for Venningen as single-vine culture up to about 1000, chamber building up to about 1840, and wire trellis cultivation from around 1840.

Wine producers based in Venningen, among other things, include Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Scheurebe, Müller-Thurgau, Ortega, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Grüner Veltliner. A documented wine from the Venninger Doktor is a dry Dornfelder Qualitätswein with 5.0 g/l residual sugar, 5.0 g/l acidity and 10.5 % vol. It is produced using must fermentation and matured in a stainless-steel tank.
