Location and classification
Dellchen is a registered vineyard site in the municipal and cadastral area of Mandel in the wine-growing region of Nahe. The wine sites directory of Rhineland-Palatinate lists the site under the large site of Rosengarten and, for the 2024 harvest, reports a planted area of 25.2 hectares.
Orientation and soils
The site, which faces south, has gradients of up to 40 per cent. Its soils are described as weathered sandstone over sandstone and Rotliegend. The geological parent material is assigned to the Permian period, about 260 to 300 million years ago.
Grape varieties and wine styles
In Dellchen, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay are documented. A further description of the site mentions Riesling, Spätburgunder and Muskat as suitable late-ripening varieties. From the site, dry, delicately off-dry and sweet Rieslings, dry Chardonnay, Spätburgunder Blanc de Noirs and dry red Spätburgunder are documented.
Production of a Riesling parcel wine
A Riesling parcel from the 2023 vintage was made separately from the usual Riesling cuvée; the vines were 42 to 44 years old. For a Riesling from another parcel, the grapes were pressed directly, fermented in an old 600-litre wooden cask and ripened for around a year on full lees before bottling.
