Location and Climate
The Chorherrnhalde lies to the west of Meersburg, in the direction of Uhldingen, in the winegrowing region of Baden. The south-facing, very steep site is at an altitude of 400 to 460 metres and has a slope gradient of around 60 percent. Its climate is described as pre-alpine maritime climate.
Soil and Classification
The geological profile of the site is shaped by molasse and moraine. For the wines of the site, glacial weathering soils and end moraine are also mentioned. The Chorherrnhalde is classified in the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The classified area covers 10.97 hectares; Riesling is given as the classified grape variety.
Name and Wines
The name Chorherrnhalde refers to the former collegiate foundation of chorheren in Bad Schussenried. The Meersburg estate (hof) of Schussenried is considered evidence of its historical presence. Wines from the site are documented from Riesling, Chardonnay, Weissburgunder and Spätburgunder, as well as a Weissburgunder-Chardonnay cuvée. A Riesling by Markgraf von Baden is described as a dry VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® and is characterised as mineral, fresh and lively.
Cultivation and Maturation
For the Weissburgunder-Chardonnay cuvée of the State Winery Meersburg, yield reduction, hand harvesting, selection and sustainable viticulture are documented. Fermentation and maturation take place partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in French oak barrels. A Chardonnay Großes Gewächs is matured as a whole-bunch wine in an acacia-wood barrel with bâtonnage; a Spätburgunder matures for twelve months following traditional must fermentation in French barriques.
