Location and single-vineyard designation
Burgwingert is the legally recognised single vineyard in the Kraichgau winegrowing region in Baden. The designation covers plots in Helmsheim and Obergrombach, both of which belong to Bruchsal.
Obergrombach section
The Obergrombach section lies above the town of Obergrombach’s inn and the Obergrombach castle, on the edge of the adjoining forest. From Obergrombach, a rising path leads into the vineyards; at the forest edge there is a viewing point with a view over the Rhine plain.
Historical development
The historic core was the Gewann “Hinter dem Schloss”, which is already documented as a winegrowing area on the Obergrombach cadastral map from 1749. In the 1940s, land consolidation and replanting with grafted vines began. The first Badische Rebumlegung-Genossenschaft was founded in Obergrombach in 1941, followed by the Obergrombach winegrowers’ cooperative in 1947.
Vines and cultivation
The historic reconstruction included land modelling in 1941 and 1942 without any mechanical equipment. After frost damage in 1956, Burgwingert was replanted manually with spade works (rigoling) until 1959. The plantings documented locally are characterised by Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Auxerrois, Müller-Thurgau and Riesling. In the 1980s, the vine-growing area was given as about 80 hectares and described as Obergrombach’s largest winegrowing area.
