Location and Geology
Ravensburger Husarenkappe Castle is a vineyard site in Sulzfeld in the wine-growing region Baden and in the Kraichgau. It faces south-west, lies at an altitude of about 220 to 260 metres, and has slope gradients of 10 to 40 percent. The documented soil type is Gipskeuper.
Classification and Grape Variety
The area classified by the VDP covers 2.66 hectares. The site is rated as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Baden; the classified grape variety is Riesling. The winery describes Husarenkappe as a historical Riesling monopoly vineyard and links the area to an unusual microclimate in connection with Gipskeuper soils.
Farming and Maturation
Ravensburg Castle works in viticulture biologically and biodynamically, uses self-produced compost and flowering sown cover crops, and schedules work according to a lunar calendar. The general vinification includes hand harvest, careful selection of the grapes, gentle processing, as little pumping as possible, and spontaneous fermentation. For the HK3 Riesling produced from HUSARENKAPPE grapes, the vintages involved were fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, then stored on the winery’s own full lees in large bottles and brought together before blending.
Name and History
The name Husarenkappe is connected by the winery with the tradition that in 1782 Baron Göler von Ravensburg received Riesling vines from the Margrave of Baden and brought them to his Husarenkappe in Sulzfeld, in order to plant them close to the castle. The winery was first mentioned in a document in 1251; the vineyards around the castle are associated with more than 750 years of wine-growing history. The site is associated with the HUSARENKAPPE Riesling GG, and the winery produces exclusively dry wines.
