Location and Topography
Bühl, also documented as a single-vineyard site called Merdinger Bühl, lies on the western steep slope of the Tuniberg in Merdingen in the wine-growing region Baden. The site, facing south to south-west, is located on the western slope of the Tuniberg.
Soil and Climate
The Tuniberg is described as a Jurassic limestone bedrock with a thick layer of loess. In Merdinger Bühl there are deep, calcareous loess soils. The climate on the Tuniberg is cooler and more humid than on the nearby Kaiserstuhl and supports slower ripening, the maintenance of higher acidity and lower potential alcohol levels. Merdingen’s location in the Upper Rhine Plain is another climatic factor for wine growing.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
For wines bearing the name Merdinger Bühl, Pinot Noir is documented. Such a wine is described as a dry red wine with notes of red berries and cherry, fine acidity and a soft, rounded texture. In addition, Weißburgunder is documented in a 2022 vintage wine, and Regent is documented in a rosé wine.
Aging Selected Wines
The documented Weißburgunder from the 2022 vintage was produced from yield-regulated grapes at 60 kilograms per are. It was given a maceration time, developed in 500-litre wooden casks and was then stored on fine lees. A Merdinger Bühl Pinot Noir from the Dr. Heger winery was fermented traditionally on the skins.
