Location and classification
The Bubenstück is classified as a single vineyard Binger Bubenstück in the Bingen area in Rheinhessen. The wine-growing site is located in the town of Bingen am Rhein, within the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle and in the cadastral district of Büdesheim. Its area is 80 hectares.
Topography and soils
The vineyards are situated at elevations of 105 to 140 metres and are oriented from south-east to south. Documented are marl and Pelosol from calcareous, clayey deposits of the Tertiary sea, as well as loess and black earth. The marl-Pelosol is deep, calcareous and rich in clay; it contains clay capable of swelling, shows limited water and air permeability, has a high nutrient content and makes root penetration more difficult. Loess and black earth are rich in humus and well developed and provide very good conditions for root penetration.
Grape varieties and wine profile
For the Binger Bubenstück, Riesling, Chardonnay and Silvaner are documented. Plots on marl and Pelosol are associated with full-bodied, dense and rich wines with moderate acidity. On loess and black earth, in accordance with the documented terroir profile, fruity wines are produced with rounded acidity and medium body.
Historical name
The wine-growing site was documented in 1532 under the name “neben bodenstücke”. The origin of the name is traced either back to the personal name Bobo or to the Middle High German word “bob(en)” in the sense of “located above”.
