Location
Brotwasser, also known as Stettener Brotwasser, is located in Stetten, a district of Kernen im Remstal, in the wine-growing region Württemberg. The vineyard lies directly below the Yburg ruin. It is oriented to the south to south-east and lies at about 300 to 340 metres above sea level.
Relief and Soils
The slope ranges from 10 to 60 percent and includes terraced steep-slope areas. Brotwasser is considered a site in the Remstal where the snow melts particularly early. The parent rock is reed sandstone; the soil type is given as sandy loam.
Cultivation and Grape Variety
The winery states the total area as 2.8 hectares and cultivates the site exclusively. Around 0.5 hectares are worked by hand in the terraced steep terrain, while 2.3 hectares are cultivated in direct cultivation with a narrow-gauge tractor. The grape variety documented is Riesling. The VDP classifies 1.10 hectares as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® in Württemberg with Riesling as the classified grape variety.
Wine and History of the Name
The Brotwasser Riesling is described as a dry, fine-fruited wine with a slender and at the same time powerful body, pronounced, integrated acidity, a mineral character, and good potential for ageing. A documented bottling is Stettener Brotwasser Riesling trocken VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. The name Brotwasser is attributed to a lady-in-waiting in Stetten in the late 17th century, who is said to have used wine instead of water to soak bread in order to conceal her wine consumption. The Kammerschreiberei acquired the lordship of Stetten in the Remstal in 1664/1666.
