Location and classification
Blume is a single vineyard in the district of Elsheim of Stadecken-Elsheim in the winegrowing region Rheinhessen. It is assigned to the Nierstein area and the large vineyard Domherr; Elsheim is listed as the cadastral district.
Topography and soils
The naturally south-facing site is located on the mid-slope and is described as a sheltered, south-west-facing hollow at around 120 to 180 metres above sea level. It is protected from the stronger winds of the Selz valley. The soils include nutrient-rich calcareous sand marl as well as calcareous clay marl and limestone clay with Terra fusca. In addition, clay-rich marl soils with marine fossils such as mussels, tower snails and coral are mentioned.
Grape varieties and wine style
For Blume, Riesling, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe and Portugieser are documented. The wines are associated with aromatic and delicate profiles; in addition, fine fruit, subtle acidity and a tendency towards minerality are described.
Name and cultivation
The origin of the name Blume is not conclusively clarified. Possible references include field flowers, the Middle High German word “blum” for yield, or a historical landowner called Blume. An Elsheim Blume Riesling from the sub-area Marhans was produced in 2024 from vines farmed in certified sustainable and organic cultivation, hand-harvested on 2 October, fermented spontaneously and aged on fine lees. Subsequently, it matured for eight months in stainless steel and in a piece barrel.
