Location and classification
The Binger Berg is an officially registered single vineyard in the Bingen district of Rheinhessen, within the collective vineyard Adelberg and in the municipality of Flonheim. The 2024 vineyard register records 127.6 hectares of planted vineyard area for the Flonheim cadastral district. The site has the number 710213.
Relief and soils
The Binger Berg is described as a hill range running in a north-south direction at around 160 to 200 metres above sea level. Its deep soils consist of clayey marl and Pelosol, which formed from calcareous, clayey deposits of the Tertiary Sea. The clay marl contains up to 40 percent limestone. The terrain is considered to be a former offshore reef that developed more than 30 million years ago during the covering of large parts of Rheinhessen by an original sea.
Grape varieties and wine profile
For the Binger Berg, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are documented. The site description links the wines with full body, dense texture, moderate acidity, a creamy mouthfeel and a ripe expression of fruit. The mineral character is described as less pronounced.
Soil characteristics and interpretation of the name
The deep, limestone-rich clay soil is rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous, warms up moderately and is difficult to root through. Water penetrates only to a limited extent, and the water reserve available to plants is also limited. For the name Binger Berg, two possible origins are given: ownership by the Bingen hospital in the 14th century, or reference to the geological offshore reef formation. A documented wine from the site was read by hand and matured in wooden casks.
