Location and Classification
Bienenlay is an officially registered single vineyard in the cadastral district of Eller in the municipality of Ediger-Eller in the wine-growing region Mosel. The site belongs to the Burg Cochem area and to the Großlage Grafschaft. In the official register of wine-growing sites, it is listed under the wine-growing site number 440218; the planted vineyard area is 4.7 hectares.
Topography and Soil
Bienenlay is described as a steep-slope vineyard and a terraced Mosel site. The site has an amphitheatre-like shape. Its deep weathering soil is characterised as a fine-grained slate soil. The slate stores the warmth of the day and releases it at night, contributing to mild conditions.
Grape Variety and Wine Profiles
Riesling is grown in Bienenlay. Documented Rieslings from the site range from dry wines to Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese, and thus include both dry and sweet versions.
