Location and landscape
Ediger-Eller lies on the Moselle in the Moselle region Mosel. The landscape is shaped by the river, meadows, forests and steep vineyards. The settlements of Ediger and Eller developed at the outlets of side valleys towards the Moselle bank.
Calmont and viticulture
The Calmont Calmont winegrowing area has an average slope gradient of around 70 per cent and a loose slate surface. The local climate is described as Mediterranean. The vineyard landscape of the region includes steep and very steep sites, whose terraces are intended to be preserved for the appearance of the landscape.
Wines and sites
The locally named wine sites include the Feuerberg and the Osterlämmchen in Ediger, as well as the Engelströpfchen, the Höll and the Pfirsichgarten in Eller. In Ediger-Eller, among other varieties, Riesling, Elbling and Dornfelder are produced. As local wine styles, Riesling from the steepest and very steepest sites of Calmont, Osterlämmchen and Feuerberg, ice wine, Beerenauslese and gently sparkling wines are documented.
History
Ediger and Eller are attested in 639 as royal villages under the Merovingian king Dagobert I. For Ediger, the endowment of a vineyard to the Abbey of Lorsch is recorded for 765. Ediger was granted town rights in 1363 and permission to fortify it. In 1969, Ediger and Eller were merged into a single twin municipality.
