Location and classification
Bergle is a registered single vineyard in the cadastral area of Fessenbach within the town of Offenburg in Baden. The official classification of wine-growing sites assigns the Fessenbach parcels 3066 and 3105 to the single vineyard Bergle and the large vineyard Fürsteneck.
Aspect and soil
The Fessenbacher Bergle faces directly south. The site is described as mild and provides good thermal conditions for the growth and ripening of the vines. The area of Bergle and Kirchherrenberg is strongly characterised by gneiss and granite.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Grüner Silvaner, Weißer Burgunder and Spätburgunder are documented from the Fessenbacher Bergle. Grüner Silvaner is vinified as a semi-dry quality wine with a light, fruity and floral profile. Weißer Burgunder is a dry Kabinett wine with a soft, creamy and mineral style. The Spätburgunder associated with the Fessenbacher Bergle is described as a dry red wine with a complex, velvety character as well as spicy and fresh berry notes.
Spätburgunder
The Spätburgunder vines in the small single vineyard of Fessenbacher Bergle were planted in 1997. The grapes are harvested at full ripeness, fermented on the skins, and then pressed. Depending on the vintage, the wine matures for 12 to 30 months in small wooden barrels.
