Location and classification
Backöfchen is a legally defined single vineyard within the municipality and cadastral district of Wallhausen in the Nahe wine-growing region Nahe. The site belongs to the Großlage Pfarrgarten. In the official vineyard register it is listed under number 510220 with 122.9 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Climate and topography
The vineyards of Wallhausen lie in the rain shadow of the Hunsrück and are protected by the Soonwald highlands. The local climate is considered mild and protected from cold winds from the north-west. Backöfchen is described as a steep hillside site, facing south to south-west.
Geological background
Backöfchen is located in the Wallhausen viticultural area at the geological boundary between the Rhenish Slate Mountains and the Saar-Nahe basin. In the vineyard landscape of Wallhausen, among other things, phyllite, weathered slate, tuff, sandstone, quartzite and conglomerate occur.
Documented wines
Under the designation Wallhäuser Backöfchen, Grauburgunder, Silvaner, Bacchus, Roter Riesling, Scheurebe, Kerner and Dunkelfelder are documented. Documented examples include dry Grauburgunder as Spätlese and a Prädikatswein, delicately off-dry wines from Silvaner, Bacchus and Roter Riesling, a fruity-sweet Scheurebe, a Kerner Auslese, and also a dry Dunkelfelder developed in barrique.
