Location and landscape
The Untertürkheimer Altenberg is located in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim in the Württemberg wine-growing region. The west-facing slope lies at an altitude of 260 to 290 metres and has a gradient of around 60 per cent. It belongs to the warm wine-growing landscape shaped by the Neckar in Stuttgart.
Area and soil
The VDP lists the Untertürkheimer Altenberg with a classified area of 28.00 hectares. In 2015, the Stuttgart municipal statistics reported a planted vineyard area of 26.5 hectares. As the geological subsoil, the VDP names Stubensandstein; the technical data sheets for the Altenberg Rieslings by Wöhrwag state for the respective wines Gipskeuper or Buntsandstein.
Grape variety and cultivation
Riesling is designated as the classified grape variety. The Riesling vines of Wöhrwag were planted on 30 June 1992 and provide low yields at ripeness. The Altenberg Riesling ripened over a long period on the fine lees.
Wine profile and classification
Documented Altenberg Rieslings show residual sugar of 0.8 to 1.3 g/l and acidity of 6.7 to 7.3 g/l. Wöhrwag describes notes of thyme, chamomile and grapefruit. The Untertürkheimer Altenberg is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; the documented wine is designated Untertürkheimer Altenberg VDP.ERSTE LAGE and is German Qualitätswein. In a local history of Untertürkheim from 1935, the Altenberg is described as an established traditional vineyard site.
